The Caring Closet

The Caring Closet at Hospice & Community Care is a durable medical loan program serving the residents of York, Chester, Lancaster, and the surrounding South Carolina counties.

For many citizens in South Carolina, the cost of renting or purchasing necessary medical equipment – items like wheelchairs, walkers, commode chairs, canes, crutches, and the like – can be prohibitive, even with insurance coverage. The Caring Closet at Hospice & Community Care seeks to practice sensible stewardship by making use of the material resources already available in our community and sharing them with people in need. Our inventory is comprised of gently used equipment donated for the express purpose of “paying it forward.” There is no income threshold or insurance requirement associated with our equipment loans.

How much does it cost?

Not a dime! The Caring Closet’s mission is to lend durable medical equipment to any resident of York, Chester, Lancaster, and surrounding South Carolina counties at NO CHARGE. Our organization is a nonprofit community resource supported by an extended network of churches, service organizations, healthcare institutions, charitable partners, and generous individuals.

Does The Caring Closet only serve low-income individuals or underinsured citizens?

There is no income threshold or requirement associated with an equipment loan from The Caring Closet. We do not ask borrowers about income level or source, and welcome neighbors from all walks of life to take advantage of our services. Loans are made regardless of medical insurance status.

What sort of equipment does The Caring Closet lend?

You name it! From wheelchairs to canes – and everything in between – we offer a wide range of durable medical equipment aimed at acute care. Because our loans are designed to be short-term (90 days), we do not stock equipment commonly associated with chronic conditions such as blood pressure cuffs or diabetes testing devices.

How do I borrow a piece of equipment?

The Caring Closet is currently open once a week on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. No appointment is necessary, although it is helpful to contact the office in advance to ensure that the equipment needed is in stock. An office volunteer will assist you in identifying the proper type of equipment and completing some simple paperwork.

How do I donate durable medical equipment?

Gently used equipment may be dropped off at the Hospice & Community Care Campus (2275 India Hook Rd Rock Hill, SC) Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
