Meet The Physicians
Byron Walthall, MD
Hospice & Community Care Medical Director, J. Byron Walthall, Jr. MD., joined the Hospice team in 2013. He is board certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Walthall was raised in Charlotte, NC and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a Morehead Scholarship for his undergraduate studies and part of his medical studies. He graduated from the UNC School of Medicine in 1978.
Dr. Walthall completed his Family Medicine Residency in Michigan Genesys Regional Medical Center. After serving as Associate Medical Director for the Pontiac General Hospital Family Practice Residency Program, he practiced full time emergency medicine for 6 years, working in both Monroe, NC and inner city Detroit MI. During this time he became board certified in Emergency Medicine, and also obtained his Masters degree in Public Health (MPH) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Dr. Walthall then returned to Family Medicine at Carmel Family Physicians in Pineville, NC. He practiced there for 23 years, including many years of holding the medical leadership role and of membership on the Board of Carolinas Physicians Network.
Having developed a strong interest in hospice and palliative care over the years, Dr. Walthall was named Medical Director of Hospice and Community Care in April 2016.
Jessica Kaiser-Mendelsohn, M.D.
Joining Dr. Walthall in caring for Hospice & Community Care patients is Jessica Kaiser-Mendelsohn, MD. She is board certified in Family Medicine. Dr. Kaiser-Mendelsohn was raised in Virginia and attended Virginia Tech for her undergraduate studies. She graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2003.
Dr. Kaiser-Mendelsohn completed her Family Medicine Residency at Carolinas Medical Center in 2006. Dr. Kaiser-Mendelsohn practiced Family Medicine at Carmel Family Physicians in Pineville, NC from 2006 – 2014, serving as the practice Medical Director from June 2011-January 2014. She is has been actively involved with the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, as well as serving on various committees in the medical community. Dr. Kaiser-Mendelsohn is also a 2012 graduate of the Queen’s College of Leadership Institute.
Dr. Kaiser-Mendelsohn joined Hospice and Community Care in 2014 as Associate Medical Director.
Crystal Katz, M.D.
Hospice & Community Care is pleased to have Crystal Katz, M.D. join our medical team as Associate Medical Director. Dr. Katz is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is licensed to practice in California , North Carolina and South Carolina . Dr. Katz was raised in Florida and attended the University of Florida for her undergraduate studies. She obtained her medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1991.
Dr. Katz completed her Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. She has 25 years of clinical experience in Anesthesiology, practicing in Arizona , California , and North Carolina . Dr. Katz is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the International Anesthesia Research Society.
Dr. Katz joined Hospice & Community Care in 2015 as Associate Medical Director.
Dr. Norris ‘Butch’ Harbold, Jr. M.D., also serves as Associate Medical Director for Hospice & Community Care. Dr. Harbold received his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1956. He graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine with his medical degree in 1966. Dr. Harbold has served as an cardiologist in our community for more than 40 years. He is board certified in cardiology and internal medicine.
Dr. Seymore is the Medical Director Emeritus of Hospice & Community Care. He is board certified in Anesthesiology, Pain Management, as well as Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Jeff Seymore was born in Sanford, NC and raised in Clemson, SC and Myrtle Beach, SC. He attended Clemson University and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1982.
Following internship at the Portsmouth Naval Regional Medical Center, he served as a flight surgeon aboard the USS Eisenhower. He then returned to Charleston to complete an anesthesiology residency from 1987-90. Dr Seymore joined Anesthesia Associates of Rock Hill in 1990, working primarily as an OR anesthesiologist. He became interested in Pain Medicine and in 1995 completed a fellowship at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He was the first medical director of the Piedmont Pain Center. Dr Seymore served in many leadership roles while at PMC, to include Chief of Staff in 1999. He joined Hospice & Community Care in August of 2004. In April 2016 Dr. Seymore retired from practice with Hospice & Community Care and was named Medical Director Emeritus.
